State legislators and democracy: political values of parliamentary elites of São Paulo and Paraná

Abstract
After 20 years of reestablished democracy in Brazil, what do the state legislators think about the regime? The goal of the article is to show the views of state legislators of the Legislative Assemblies of the States of São Paulo and Paraná on democracy. For the views we use a structured and self-administered questionnaire. The results show that for the state legislators: i) democracy is stable, ii) it is superior to any other kind of regime, iii) it’s support comes from some public policy and the use of voting and iv) parties and elections are important for democracy.
Resumo
Depois de 20 anos de reintroduzida a democracia no Brasil, o que pensam os deputados estaduais sobre esse regime? Neste artigo, examinamos as opiniões sobre a democracia das elites parlamentares das Assembleias Legislativas dos estados de São Paulo e do Paraná. As opiniões foram coletadas através de um questionário estruturado e autoadministrado e revelam que, para os parlamentares, a democracia: i) está estável, ii) é superior a qualquer outro tipo de regime, iii) apresenta um conteúdo de apoio sociopolítico sustentado em algumas políticas sociais estatais e na utilização do voto e que iv) os partidos e as eleições são importantes para mantê-la.
