The author analyses the results of the Brazilian Plebiscites for the system of government in 1963 e 1993 and shows the differences related to political involvement of the electorates in the two ocasions.
This article analyses the process of democratization in industrial societies and it indentifyes aspects of democratic stability. It argues that the cognitive mobilization and cultural factors are crucial to stable democracy, and that the presence of post-materialist values, subjective weel-being and trust are strongly associated to it. The link between stable democracy and economic development exists because the first leads to a pro-democratic political culture.
The article analyses the fragile relationship between the support for democracy and the democratic institutions. The data come from surveys conducted between 1989 and 1993 in Brazil.
